Happy New Year!

Well, 2010 is coming to a close, and it’s been a wild ride. Palm was purchased by HP, kicking off a sequence of events that have left webOS enthusiasts in the uncomfortable position of chasing unicorns and rainbows rather than reveling in what the platform could and should be. Many (most?) of us are still using our original Sprint Palm Pre, or not, and we continue to hope against hope that the combined financial, engineering, and supply chain might of HP Palm will bring us the kind of hardware and core software components needed to bring market success.

The good thing is, we’ll get all that in 2011 for sure. The big question will be: how quickly will the webOS installed base grow large enough to bring the kind of developer attention to fix the platform’s gaping holes in app support? My guess remains the same: it’ll be toward the end of the year that webOS will offer the same capabilities as iOS and Android (and WP7, for that matter), meaning that I’m hoping to be able to write a much different closing piece to 2011—but just barely.

All of the tech geekiness aside, here’s to a great 2011. Have a safe and happy New Year’s Eve, and we’ll see you on the other side.
